Fife Canoeing Activities Group

Child Protection

Fife Canoeing and Activities Group (FCAG) has a duty of care towards children and vulnerable adults. A number of measures, in accordance with the Scottish Canoe Association (SCA), have been put into place by the club to safeguard them from harm.
After an introductory period to canoeing, all adults involved in club activities will be asked to fill in a registration form, to enable a Disclosure Scotland check (police check) to be made. These checks do not indicate if a person has criminal tendencies, but do give a record of all criminal convictions.

Who Requires to Complete a SCRO Registration Form?
Qualified Coaches
Adult Participants aged 18 and over
Regular Helpers
Parents who help to transport children (other than their own) to / from kayaking locations

New Adults Involved In Club Activities

Adults will be issued with a Disclosure Scotland form within four weeks of initially participating in club activities / forms being available.

Completed forms should be returned to FCAG's Child Protection Co-ordinator within six weeks of first participating in club activities.

Completed forms will be passed to the Scottish Canoe Association's Child Protection Officer via FCAG's Child Protection Co-ordinator.

The result of the Disclosure Scotland check result will be sent to the SCA Child protection officer. (S)He will pass on relevant information to FCAG's Child Protection Co-ordinator. This avoids people in individual clubs receiving information that they do not need to know about friends or volunteers in their Club (e.g. being charged for non-payment of a TV licence). Applicants will also receive a certificate directly from Disclosure Scotland.

A copy of the disclosure form will be kept in a locked cabinet by the SCA until the club has the information and then will be securely destroyed.

No information will ever be forwarded to any Club without discussion with the person involved.

If a person wishes to dispute the information on their disclosure there is an appeal system.

Any person who has a history of child abuse or other serious crimes can thus be recognised and prevented from working with children and vulnerable adults in a canoe environment.

If you have any questions regarding Disclosure Scotland checks please contact FCAG's Child Protection Co-ordinator.
